To get to Hon Tam, which is about 10 km to the southeast of Nha Trang City, you have to get to Nha Trang first. From Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, you can get to Nha Trang by air, by train or by bus.

By air

There are more than 7 daily flights (direct flights and connecting flights) from Hanoi and 8 daily flights (direct flights) from Ho Chi Minh City to Nha Trang. A 1-hour-50-minute flight from Hanoi costs around VND 1.5 million (USD $66) while a 1-hour-5-minute from Ho Chi Minh City is about VND 700,000 (USD $30) for economy class.

By train

Traveling by train to Nha Trang is one of the most interesting traveling experiences in Vietnam. To Nha Trang, 12 trains from Ho Chi Minh City (10 hours) and 18 from Hanoi (12 hours) cost USD $6.6 – $35 and $40 – $50 respectively for different classes of seats. By bus

Traveling by bus from Ho Chi Minh City to Nha Trang is the best and the easiest way to go. Mai Linh, Phuong Trang, Ha Linh and Hoang Long, whose buses are spacious and service is of high standard, are some of the highest recommended bus operators. A bus ride takes 9-10 hours with the ticket prices being from VND 180,000 to 240,000 (USD $8-10.5). You can catch a direct bus to Nha Trang from Mien Tay Bus Station but expect bus stop to pick up guests along the way. From Hanoi, Hoang Long is the only bus running to Nha Trang. The bus takes 26 hours and costs VND 580,000 (USD $26).

It is also possible to get to Nha Trang by motorbike, but, it is rather long, exhausting and therefore, not recommended journey as you should save energy for all the amazing experiences on Hon Tam Island.

If you want to get free of mind, it is wise to use the day package service of many resorts on Hon Tam Island. Expect the price to be VND 600,000 (USD $26) with 2-way transportation, lunch buffet, fruit buffet and several activities’ fee included. Without meal, it costs about USD $14. However, if you want to explore this charming island in your own schedule, speedboat is way to go. Speedboats in Nha Trang are available for VND 100,000 (USD $4.4) for a –one-way ticket. Expect the traveling time to be around 20 minutes.

By traveling by speedboat, you can depart and return to Nha Trang whenever you want. If you have only 1 day to spare on Hon Tam Island, you can get there early in the morning and comeback to the inland late in the evening. To meet the increasing demand of backpackers, there are 20 daily boats departing to and from Hon Tam Pier. If you miss the last boat at 10.00 PM, don’t worry! You can rent a private boat to take you back to Nha Trang. However, the price is pretty high.

However, if you are not going on a tight budget and schedule, staying for at least 1 night on this island is not a bad idea. That way, you can admire the impressive charm of something out of a James Bond film within a day, which is beautiful in daylight but better at night as well as take part in a wide range of interesting activities such as: fire-camping, a helium balloon; boat rowing, fishing, water skiing, mountain climbing, windsurfing, parachute pulling, forest discovery, jets kiing, parasailing, windsurfing, adventure diving and particularly airship.
